Cross-country skiing

Les Artigaux is just 10 minutes away from the largest cross-country skiing area in the Pyrénées - the Col-du-Soulor. This area links to the neighbouring Col-de-Couraduque, which gives skiers 100km of prepared marked pistes to choose from. There are also circuits for snow shoe walking and guides are available if you want to head off to the more remote areas.  At the Col-de-Couraduque there is a moving carpet to take the hard work out of tobogganing and also a separate tobogganing area for very young children. There are also sundecks with deck chairs where you can relax and soak up the sun. The café/restaurant also has a sun terrace with superb views across the Val d'Azun and they serve local specialities such as garbure. There is also an equipment hire shop which has a selection of good quality skis, boots, snow shoes and toboggans.

At the Col-du-Soulor there is a 300m zip wire on which you can reach speeds of up to 60km an hour. Below the zip wire is the tobogganing piste. There are several cafes and restaurants and a hire shop for skis, boots, snow shoes and toboggans.

Downhill skiing

There are 5 downhill skiing resorts within easy striking distance of Les Artigaux.

Barèges/La Mongie - Domaine-du-Tourmalet   1450 - 2500m (40 minutes to Barèges from Les Artigaux)

This is the largest ski area in the Pyrénées with 100km of pistes, 2 snowparks and 40 lifts. The car park at Tournaboup above Barèges village is right next to the departure point for two chairlifts as well as the moving carpets for complete beginners. From here you can either head towards the Lienz area above Barèges with runs through the trees or towards the Col-du-Tourmalet and then over in to La Mongie. An extensive network of snow canons ensures good snow coverage throughout the season. There are runs for all standards including the challenging off-piste descent from the Pic-du-Midi.

Cauterets  1730m - 2450m (40 minutes to Cauterets town from Les Artigaux)

It is just an 8 minute ride in the high speed telecabine from Cauterets to the Cirque-du-Lys ski area. There is 36km of skiing for all standards in a large sunny bowl with most runs leading back to the restaurant and sun terrace. For complete beginners there is a moving carpet as well as a special kids area.

There is also the Pont d'Espagne ski area 7km beyond Cauterets. This is principally for cross-country skiing with 36km of trails along the river and up on to the plateau. There are also 4 downhill runs with a beginners and tobogganing area right next  to the Chalet-du-Clot café and restaurant

Hautacam  1500 - 1800m (40 minutes from Les Artigaux)

Hautacam is a small resort above Argelès-Gazost with 26km of pistes. It is mainly suitable for beginners and intermediates with some nice runs through the trees. It is great value and has superb views. As well as the skiing there is a new mountain luge with a run of 700m and reaching speeds of up to 60km an hour. It is possible to buy a lift pass which also includes a ride on the luge.
